This involves watching 14 video clips and a pass mark of 44 out of a possible 75 points.

Booking the theory test

To book a theory test you must first have a provisional licence. To apply for a provisional licence please click the link below.

The test cost £23 and this can also be booked using the book your theory test link below at the bottom of the page.

Revising for the theory and hazard perception test

You can use books and software to revise for the theory test and take practice tests.

The best advice is to read the following books on which the multiple-choice questions are based on.

  • The Highway Code
  • Driving the essential skills
  • Know your traffic signs

Study these to learn the rules and skills you'll be tested on. They are available to buy from most high streets or online book shops.

When taking practice tests, please be aware that the questions arn't used in the real test, but they are based on the same topics as the test.

To prepare for the hazard perception part of the test, there are many apps available for Apple or Android phones and tablets, or you can also buy it as an interactive DVD from most high street or online book shops.

Please feel free to ask your instructor for any advice towards preparing for the theory test.

What to take to the test

You must take your UK photocard driving licence to your test.

If you have a licence from Northern Ireland, take the photocard and paper counterpart licence.

Please note the test will be cancelled and you won't get your money back if you don't take right things with you.

Practical Test

About the practical test

The practical driving test lasts about 40 minutes. There are 5 parts to the test and these include:

  • an eyesight test
  • "show me, tell me" vehicle safety questions
  • general driving ability
  • reversing
  • independent driving

There are 3 types of faults you might make during the test. These are

  • Driving Faults

  • Serious Faults

  • Dangerous Faults

You will pass your test if you make no more than 15 driving faults and no serious or dangerous faults.

The test is the same for both manual or automatic cars.

Booking the practical test

You can book your driving test when you've passed your theory test.

The driving test costs £62 for week days and £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays, though not all test centres do these. If you are required to take an extended test because you have been banned from driving, the cost is £124 weekdays and £150 for weekends etc. This test lasts about 70 minutes.

To book your practical test please click the link below at the bottom of the page.

Preparing for the practical test

The best way to prepare for your driving test is to first learn how to drive with an approved driving instructor (ADI). The DVSA, the people who set the test, recommend at least 40 hours professional training, with private practice with family or friends inbetween the lessons.

You will be taught to drive on all types of roads and taught how to reverse and carry out manoeuvres.

What to take to the test

You must take

  • your UK photocard driving licence to your test.
  • your theory test pass certificate.
  • a car. The examiners do not supply a car for the test. You will use your Pace Driving Schools instructors car, you can use your own if it meets the rules.

If you have a licence from Northern Ireland, take the photocard and paper counterpart licence.

Please note the test will be cancelled and you won't get your money back if you don't take right things with you.
